Camporee 2008

camping

Camporee is an important part of the Scouting tradition. This year’s theme is American Heroes. Patrols select their American Hero and “channel them” with clothing, songs, menus, pictures, flags, games, stories and skits. There will be a special ceremony for Eagle Scouts. Please invite all the Eagle Scouts you know to arrive Saturday afternoon and stay for the Eagle Feast. Senior Scouts interested in fun Staff positions like inspections, events, or ceremonies should email Scoutmaster Kent Screechfield at sm@troop805.org. Tell him how to get in touch with you. Staff formation has already begun. Adults who want to help at Camporee or want more information can contact Mike Dubrall at miked@50miler.com.

Turn In New Cub Apps!

Cub Scouts

Cub leaders, be sure to turn in all new cub applications immediately - a boy is not a Cub Scout until his application has been submitted to the Council Office. If you have any questions or need applications picked-up, please contact District Executive Tim Welty at (925) 674-6125 or meridian@bsa-mdsc.org.

Health and Safety Says...

Good Turn for America

The bears may be getting ready for a long winter nap but the Boy Scouts are still heading for the mountains. What is your troop doing to get ready for some cold weather camping? We need leaders who are Okpik trained. Check out our District's training opportunities. I am sure you too have noticed that your Scouts just keep getting bigger. Make a list of the gear and equipment that scouts will need to insure a great cold weather camping experience. You know the saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes." It doesn't have to be expensive. You can pass along some of that cold weather gear that some boys just outgrow. Get a few troops together and have a "gear swap." If you intend to ski, remember that everyone needs a helmet. Set your calendar and plan the outing carefully - food, equipment, transportation, activities. Then contact the Ranger - he's a good resource who can give your plan the thumbs up. You might also consider a meeting with videos that will demonstrate safety for snow camping, building snow shelters, etc. Be prepared last minute planning just will not work with cold weather camping. Don't rouse the bears.
