Overview

 

The Cow Mountain Recreation Area is 50,000 acres of rugged terrain with elevations ranging from 800 to 4000 feet located in the Mayacmas Mountains between Ukiah and Lakeport. The Scott's Valley Road entrance from Lakeport is a rugged trail and is closed during the winter due to impassable high water.

 

How To Get There

 

From Kelseyville: Turn east on Live Oak Drive at the traffic light at the intersection of Hwy 29 and Live Oak Drive. At the stop sign, turn right on Main Street, and take an immediate left on Konocti Road. Continue on Konocti Road 4 miles to the CDF gate.

 

Camping Facilities

 

Clear Lake State Park: $15 site/night, 8 people per site. There is also a group campground: 50 people maximum for $60/night. Call (707) 279-4293 for more information. Reservations can be made through ReserveAmerica at 1-800-444-7275 or online at www.reserveamerica.com. The Park is located about 3 miles northeast of Kelseyville on Soda Bay Road. To reach the park, turn east on Live Oak Drive (traffic light at Live Oak Drive and Hwy 29). At the stop sign, turn left on Main Street, then right on State Street, and another right on Gaddy Lane. Follow Gaddy Lane out to Soda Bay Road. Turn right on Soda Bay Road and follow signs to Clear Lake State Park.

 

The Hike

 

This trail will follow the mountain up through privately owned orchards which are the highest and most scenic in Lake County. At the top of these orchards is a grove of 500 year old oak and the original homesteader's cabin built in 1903. From here you may also visit one of the peaks.
