Scoutings 100th Anniversary

In 1909, William D. Boyce was traveling through the foggy streets of England and lost his way. A lone Scout came out through the fog and helped Mr. Boyce find his way back to his hotel. Mr. Boyce attempted to tip the Scout, but the Scout refused payment saying that he was merely doing his duty as a Boy Scout.

Mr. Boyce was so impressed by the Scouts actions, that he returned to the United States and in 1910 formed the Boy Scouts of America. Since then, the Boy Scouts of America has guided more than 100 million Americans in the principles of the Scout Oath and Law.

In late 2009 and 2010, the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council will celebrate 100 years of Scouting with one event each month. Make sure you don't miss out on what is sure to be the biggest celebration of the century.

Highlander Program

Started in 2003, the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council's Highlander program encourages youth in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing to experience the outdoor wonders that exist within our Council. The program is a series of 14 progressive hikes with a center patch awarded with the first hike and a rocker for each hike. Patches are available for purchase at the Pleasant Hill Scout Shop, or by mail order with the patch order form. Many of the hikes are specific trails, but others, Briones for example, may be awarded for any hikes done within the park. Most of the hikes can be done by youth of any age, however the more difficult ones should only be attempted by Boy Scouts or Venturers.

All of the trips can be completed as day hikes, and overnight camping is available at or near every site. Specific information on camping facilities is listed for each hike. Please remember to file a tour permit and get all necessary approvals ahead of time.

The rivers of Northern California and the Pacific Ocean provide different settings for different Paddlesports experiences. A Scout or leader who completes his first PATH OF THE PADDLE adventure earns the center segment and a rocker. Each completed outing earns one more rocker.

The OA was established in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. The goal was to emphasize these as lifelong guidelines, and to encourage continued participation in Scouting and camping. The Ut-In Sélica Lodge represents the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council.
